"The Blessed Hope Catechism": A Practice of Devotion w/ Erik Reynolds (Q7)
Question 7: What is God?
Answer: God is spirit and does not have a body like men.
We study the nature of God so that we can learn who he is. As we grow in faith and knowledge we are able to grow in worship. As followers of Christ we are able to worship what we know instead of worshipping out of ignorance. We no longer need to worship God in a temple or a building, but are able to worship he who is spirit, in spirit and truth.
In the Old Testament we see that God would make his people more aware of his presence through the glory cloud. This cloud would take up residence in the Tabernacle in the Tent of Meeting. The cloud itself was not God, but his presence was in the cloud. Similarly, as Christians we are able to sense God’s presence through the Spirit who indwells us.
The Holy Spirit is still a distinct person of the Trinity, however, it’s in this person that God accommodates himself to his people so that they can experience his presence. Therefore, you are able to experience the presence of God no matter your location or setting. You simply must seek the Lord earnestly, and worship him in spirit and truth.
